National Junior Honor Society |
|
Ms. Torres is contemplating which service project to complete next! |
The National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) is one of the nation's premier organizations established to recognize outstanding middle school students. More than just an honor roll, NJHS serve to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, Character, and Citizenship. These characteristics have been associated with membership in the organization since their beginnings in 1921 and 1929.
Today, it is estimated that more than one million students participate in activities of the NHS and NJHS. NHS and NJHS chapters are found in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, many U.S. Territories, and Canada. Chapter membership not only recognizes students for their accomplishments, but challenges them to develop further through active involvement in school activities and community service. The Memorial Middle School Bulldog Chapter has about 80 active members. These students excel academicall as well as in other areas.
At Memorial Middle School our Bulldog Chapter of NJHS is very active in community service projects. Our students raised food, clothes, and toys for the disadvantaged (Metropolitian Ministries and Salvation Army). They walked and raised money for cancer awareness (American Cancer Society) and premature babies (March of Dimes). They cleaned up the community (Tampa's Clean City Day). Most of all the students learned that they are part of something greater than themselves. They are part of a larger community. It is said, "it takes a community to raise a child." These children know and understand the value of this important partnership. NJHS students also MC assemblies, escort visitors around campus (Great American Teach-In), organized Kids Vote '09, and are
active around campus participating in band, SWAT, office assistants, athletics, and much more.
